CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

A weekend colour supplement requires an editorial photograph for a double page spread to compliment an article on ‘childhood memories’. The shot has to evoke nostalgia, warmth, security, tenderness and the fun on the complete opposite depending upon the photographers reading of the brief. Regardless of interpretation, the result depends greatly on the emotive use of light to fulfil the brief. NB – “Appropriate” focus over area shown in set-up. Format: AGE ‘Good Weekend’ Saturday supplement double page. Im thinking something minnie-ture!

PAINT / COSMETICS

A quality paint/cosmetics manufacturer requires a photograph to launch a ‘new’ brand of product. The manufacturer is the market leader in its field and is known for its high quality products. The brief is to show all of part of the packaging. With brand name and type of paint clearly visible. The manufacturer wants to show however some of the various colours available, the art director suggesting the best be illustrated bye perhaps using a range of coloured products within the shot. The choice of colours to be used is to be determined by the photographer, taking into account the inability of film emulsions to sometimes faithfully record true colour. This is a critical element to the paint/cosmetics manufacturer – NB – depth of field optional – logos must me readable. FORMAT OPTIONAL

ESSAY

1. Discuss how in the 19th century photography was utilised to construct notions of social and cultural identity. Examine a more contemporary example of portraiture that has a resonance with these earlier practices.

2. Why was photography so successfully incorporated into forms of institutional control in the 19th century? What contemporary resonances may stem from the incorporation of photography into institutional scientific and/or artistic discourses?

3. Discuss the relationship that the photographic medium has had with war and conflict (you may find it useful to compare and contrast particular conflicts or photographers work). What factors have influenced the ways in which photographers have produced images in relation to war?

4. Explore the reasons for the enduring power of documentary photography in its examination of a chosen issue/subject (you are encouraged to examine a range of factors and include recourse to the histories of documentary photography).

5. Discuss how and why photographers utilising the medium for artistic purposes have utilised story telling and allegory into their work.
